shame shame shame

The police charged at peaceful protesters singing O Canada. I was present at the demonstration in the second video where a similar situation occurred, we danced and we sang, we told them they were sexy and they were cute and to take off their riot suits, we had the right to be there, but what did they do? They stormed us, kicked us with their heavy boots, riot shields and metal batons on our bare bodies of unprotected flesh and bones.

ETA: The second video doesn't seem to be showing up. Watch it here.

Police state.
Queen and Spadina this weekend.
Police had the gear and manpower to stop the vandalism on city streets but instead they chose not to. Publicity tactic to justify security spending? You decide.

My couchsurfer has been arrested, my thoughts are with him and all the hundreds of others who are being detained unjustly at the moment. Is this Canada? Release them, we want justice.

release them.

500 people were arrested last night, hundreds from peaceful protests.

If you are looking for more information about what is happening or happened last night, be weary of what mainstream media is reporting, they have too much to lose, sponsorships from major banks and advertisers to please. I'm finding lots of great articles on Rabble so check them out.

G20 police let rioters run amok and then struck back hard on all activists

Toronto is burning? Or is it?

shame

police brutality

Today as part of the peaceful protest happening in Toronto for G20 I experienced and witnessed a shameful amount of police brutality. I'm going to write more about it on my next blog post.

live in it

"Perhaps as you went along you did learn something. I did not care what it was all about. All I wanted to know was how to live in it. Maybe if you found out how to live in it you learned from that what it was all about."

— Ernest Hemingway, The Sun Also Rises

ruin

"But those tools are not our tools, and that business is not our business. For us those conventions are ruin, those tools are death."

- Virginia Woolf, Mr. Brown and Mrs. Bennet

I just sat with a bunch of G20 protesters at Tent City for 4 hours. We smoked, we laughed and we sang. At one point I almost got into the oil wrestling rink with this greasy dude, I truly felt like I was living in it.

Fat Girl

fat girl

Fat Girl is a poignant film by French director Catherine Breillat, it's a honest coming of age story dealing with a young girl's sexual exploration and about two sisters competing for beauty. It's filmed in incredibly creamy colours, orange popsicles, Normandy sands and celadon greens. The film is usually quiet, slow and hazy but it ends with a thoroughly disturbing scene which literally strikes you with an axe.

"Let us not take it for granted that life exists more fully in what is commonly thought big than in what is commonly thought small. "
- Virginia Woolf, Modern Fiction

My friend Audi Ranalli took these. Aren't they beautiful?
We learned in my Modernist Literature class how important it was to make beauty out of the everyday. Artists, whatever their medium, are the only ones who are able to keep darkness and confusion at bay for just a little while longer. Using artistry to create these perfect little moments of unity, we are able to bring people together in our otherwise disconnected lives, these memories remain with us, luminous like gems.

I am your neighbour and a liar...

"I am collecting beautiful objects. A pair of shoes. Some glasses. Telephone. Typewriter. They are made from wood and felt. With apparent stitches. Their delicate and finished appearance is friendly. And they are quiet."

“Martin Margiela’s innovative work exemplifies a return to the raw materials of dress and often exchanges finish and finesse for something more akin to process in modern art. Exposed lining and frayed threads figure prominently in Margiela’s garments, both as a testament to their internal construction and a challenge to conventional notions of fashion and couture. Margiela is part of a contemporary group of avant-garde Belgium designers that also includes Dirk Bikkembergs (born 1962) and Ann Demeulemeester (born 1959). These shoes, worn on the fashion runway, were attached to the model’s feet with clear packing tape and defy the accepted practices of footwear construction.”

Aw, remember these?
I took a lot of art classes when I was in elementary school and I distinctively remember this one project where we had to paint in this kind of style, with lots of purples and blues in ribbons of colour.

I do declare

'One of them saw Georgette and said: "I do declare. There is an actual harlot. I'm going to dance with her, Lett. You watch me."
The tall dark one, called Lett, said: "Don't you be rash."

The wavy blond one answered: "Don't you worry, dear." And with them was Brett.
I was very angry. Somehow they always made me angry. I know they are supposed to be amusing, and you should be tolerant, but I wanted to swing on one, any one, anything to shatter that superior, simpering composure.'

swimmingly

I painted my nails today. The colour's from L'Oreal's new summer Ocean collection. Nail polishes always have cheesy names, this one is called Water's Edge. ohhh. The consistency kind of sucks, it goes on sorta streaky, but it's a pretty colour. They package it like Essie, but the quality's not even close.
